Branding Session with Orange County Florist Mulberry & Moss

Branding Session with Mulberry & Moss

I don’t know how I get so lucky to have the most talented AND beautiful friends, but it makes it SO much fun to photograph them. Insert my friend Sarah of Mulberry & Moss, a local florist here in Orange County. She had been asking for months to do a branding session and it ended up being well worth the wait. I was expecting her to want to have the branding session in her floral studio and gather lots of behind the scenes images of her working, but what she asked for was so much better… she wanted content that would show her personality, lifestyle and interests that she could sprinkle into the content she already has and share across her social media platforms. She is wildly obsessed with Starbucks, her cat Milo, and working from home with an afternoon glass of wine. So, we captured brand photos that showcased all of those things and the results were oh so cute…

Tell me a little about your business and what you do…

I’m a wedding and event floral designer. I’ve had my business for 7 years now and I love it!

How would you describe your branding?

Up until recently, I didn’t really have a branding direction. Everyone loves flowers, so my floral designs have always done a decent job of marketing themselves through visual social media platforms and word of mouth. But I still felt like there were areas for improvement, especially when it came to building real connections with people through my branding.

What kinds of images were you hoping to achieve through this branding session?

I was looking to share more of my personality and my own unique interests, especially ones that I felt my followers could relate to. I thought, if I were booking my own wedding vendors, I’d probably be most likely to work with someone who is actually a person I’d hang out with. So when it came to my branding session, I wanted to show a peek into my life outside of floral design. Most days, what that looks like is just me sitting on my couch with a messy bun, cuddling my cat and sipping coffee while I try and get work done. But I figured, as silly as that may seem, the best way to allow my followers to get to know the real me would be to show them just that!

My branding photos have been so useful for social media but also for other marketing spaces such as my website bio and email campaigns! Since I went in a more personal direction with my branding photos, now whenever I pop into my subscribers’ inbox, I feel way less like a salesperson and more just like I am a friend popping in to say “what’s up!”.

Why did you decide to do a branding session?

The number one way that my clients find my business is through Instagram, so I decided that it would be a smart decision to invest a little bit into building even more connection on my social media platforms.

People have always loved my florals, but I felt like my branding was missing a human element that people could connect with. Before I started showing my own face on social media, I noticed a lot of the interactions in my posts were either from other florists or my friends and people who know me. Since I started sharing my own face on social media, as well as bits from my personal life and interests, I’ve started to see a lot of new faces leaving comments, saying hello, and showing interest in my brand. Now I always try to think of ways I can share my personal story with my followers, and this branding session has helped a lot with that!

What was your favorite part of your branding session?

Erin is so fun to hang with, so the whole thing was a blast and flew by! But we had some time to chat before and afterwards, and that was the best part! She knows a ton about branding and is super helpful with the entire process!

Would you recommend a branding session to other small businesses?

I would definitely recommend a branding session to any small business owner, even just to start sharing a few headshots with your followers, and let them see your smile and who you are as a person. It’s one of the best things I’ve done for my business. I plan to do lots more branding sessions with Erin!
