Palm Springs Wedding at Colony 29

Palm Springs Wedding at Colony 29

I hit it off with Victor & Elaine almost instantly when they contacted me to photograph their Palm Springs wedding at Colony 29. They told me the story of how they met and got engaged and told me that they wanted to recreate this story for their UCLA engagement session. I absolutely loved this idea because it had so much meaning and I was so honored to be able to capture that for them.

After we had an absolute blast shooting their engagement session, I fell in love with them all over again on their wedding day. It was a perfect November day with the most gorgeous light (that Palm Springs is notorious for). Victor and Elaine were surrounded by their closest family and friends as they celebrated their exchanging of vows. There were lots of happy tears shed and definitely so much laughter. It's clear that these two live life to the fullest and they are so loved by everyone around them. They sure know how to throw one hell of a party!

How the Bride and Groom met...

From the Bride- "Vic and I met while students at UCLA in 2008. I was invited by a friend to attend an alumni networking event and without thinking twice, I went. As I would at other networking events, I met some great people and one of the people I met that day would change my whole life. I met Vic and we shook hands- which he argues is the longest handshake he's ever experienced (I beg to differ but sure). We exchanged names and soon enough connect on AIM and the rest is history. Even with his crazy work hours, we always found ways to have foodie dates and talk. I appreciated the connection we had and we grew into friends and eventually it developed into much more. We both were goal driven and we knew that we were looking for someone to not complete us but someone who would complement each of us to be the best we could be.

Fast forward to 7+ years of dating...we have been there for each other for our highest and lowest points, pushed each other to go to grad school (he completed his MBA and I competed my Masters in Communications), traveled to almost 30 countries together and experienced the world together... but more than anything, Vic has been my constant- someone I continue to love more each day and someone I continue to learn from and admire."

How He Proposed...

From the Bride- "Vic is a person who takes the time to plan things thoughtfully and meticulously- double checking details, mulling over different scenarios, weighing out pros and cons and planning the perfect execution of his vision. The proposal was no exclusion. December 29, 2016- Vic insisted on picking me up from work prior to our flight out to Vegas days before New Year’s Eve and to celebrate in one of our favorite places. The plan we agreed upon was dinner at our favorite restaurant C&O Trattoria because Vic didn't want to waste their gift cards "expiring at the end of the year" (lies). Once at Venice Beach where the restaurant was, Vic revealed that the reservation wasn't for another hour and suggested grabbing some drinks at Cabo Cantina across the street. Once at Cabo Cantina, we were seated at the exact table where we shared our first drinks together almost 8 years ago. We watched the sunset while sipping on their margaritas (just like our first date, I insisted that we didn't share a drink and each get one).

On the way to restaurant, Vic suggested a short detour to the Venice Beach Pier which was just a short walk from Cabo Cantina. We walked down the pier and stopped by the exact spot where we shared our first kiss. I was still clueless about what was about to happen but appreciated Vic's sentiments reminiscing about how far we had come as a couple since our first date. Getting hangry and cold, we finally made our way to the restaurant.

We finally made it to C&O Trattoria and ordered our favorite dish which is the Lobster Linguini (and of course, devoured the unlimited garlic knots). This restaurant was a favorite date night spot and where we have celebrated many birthdays and milestones. I was so excited to eat and Vic was not himself- not eating anything besides sipping on several cups of tea!

As dinner was winding down and food coma was setting in, a random guy named Johnny stops by their table and introduces himself as a magician from the Magic Castle. Johnny asked if he could do magic tricks for us to practice his new material and we agreed. After a few impressive magic tricks that won me over (as skeptical as I was), Johnny asked Vic to think of something he really wanted and assured us that he could make whatever it is appear. With Vegas in mind, Vic whispered into my ear "$100" and BOOM- Johnny burns a piece of paper making it into a $100 bill and handed it to Vic.

Johnny then asked me what I wanted him to make appear. Because I also had Vegas in mind, I whispered "$100" in Vic's ear. Laughing at my ridiculous answer, Vic grabs the piece of paper that Johnny was holding, burns the paper and BOOM- a ring is in his hand and he kneels to pop the question.

Amidst trying to process everything, Vic asked me to sit down while simultaneously placing a portable speaker on the table. Playing loudly from the speaker is Vic singing the Adam Sandler "Grow Old With You" song. We both laughed so hard which turned into tears of joy and excitement for our next chapter! Then to off Vegas we flew!"

How did you decide on Colony 29 for your wedding venue?

From the bride- "When the gates of Colony 29 opened, we fell in love with the property. Although we have gone to Palm Springs so many times, it was so fun and unexpected to come across the gem that Colony 29 is. Once the gates open, it feels like you are transported to a different world. Everywhere we looked, there was so much beautiful greenery and the street of spain and the villas seemed so enchanting. We knew this is where we wanted to spend our wedding weekend and our big day."

What was your favorite moment of your wedding day?

From the bride- "My favorite part of the wedding was the part of the ceremony when we read our personal vows in front of our friends and family. For both of us, we knew that the ceremony was the centerpiece of our entire wedding day. When I kissed my mom and grandpa as they handed me off, it all became even more real that I'd soon be a Mrs. As Vic and I stood next to each other hand in hand in front of everyone- there was a sense of anticipation and nervousness- but once we started reading our vows, the nerves settled and it felt comfortable, exciting and we were full of emotions. For the several minutes we exchanged vows and it felt like we were the only people on that stage- exchanging heartfelt words of commitment and sharing stories that shaped us as a couple. I loved that there were tears (mostly mine lol) but there was laughter too- it was perfect, he was perfect!"

What are you most looking forward to in your marraige?

From the Groom- "I’m looking forward to continuing to grow as people and as a team with Elaine. I can’t wait to start a family (5 kids please!) and to experience all the joys that come with one and also to tackling all of the challenges the future holds head on together with Elaine."

From the Bride- "I am most looking forward to officially becoming husband and wife. I look forward to starting to plan for a family and continuing to build a life together. Up until this point we have already established some routines, accepted (and embraced) our differences or unique ways of thinking or doing things- I look forward to continuing to do so. Most of all, I look forward to growing old with my best friend and my person. It's amazing to think that we still have so much to learn about each other and we have a lifetime adventure together. I feel blessed to embark on a marriage where I don't have to ever be alone in conquering my biggest fears/pains and in celebrating the big and small milestones in life."

What was the inspiration behind your wedding?

From the bride- "Vic and I love to travel, we've been to over 30 countries together and with travel being such a huge part of our growth and adventure as a couple, we wanted to incorporate that in our wedding. We wanted to give our guests an experience- anywhere from the physical beauty of the venue itself to spending quality time with our closest friends and family. I wanted our guests to feel like they were special and a part of our adventure. From the Where in the World Are You Sitting sign to naming tables after countries we've visited, I even made handmade postcards with a picture of us at the country. On top of that, it was so important to me to write every single guest a special hand written note. Even the welcome drinks were inspired by some of our favorite drinks for our travels!

Another big inspiration was wanting to make sure our personalities were present in the different touches of our wedding and that our guests felt comfortable to let loose and have fun. Our signature drinks were named after our favorites- Taylor Swift and Kobe Bryant. The flowers were bright, bold and fun. Vic even broke it down on the dance floor (numerous times) and it set the tone for an evening of fun! From the drinks to the dancing to the afterparty and weekend long celebration in the villas- we have so many memories that will last a lifetime."

Any advice for brides planning their wedding day?

From the Bride- "My piece of advice is to soak it all in. When you walk down the aisle, soak it all in- look at everyone, take your time and just be in the moment. When you make your vows, take a quick second to just soak in that you are about to make these vows and live out the day you both have been waiting for."

Calamigos Ranch Wedding at the Redwood Room

Redwood Room Wedding at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu

When Matt and Kristen reached out to me to photograph their wedding at the Redwood Room at Calamigos Ranch, I knew I was in for a treat. You see, I've worked at Calamigos Ranch before and fell in love with the dense oak trees and twinkle lights that cover the property. It's one of the most romantic wedding venues in the area, especially in the evening when the twinkle lights illuminate the grounds. The wedding venue is tucked in the Malibu Hills, right outside of Los Angeles- a treat for those looking to escape the city for an outdoor wedding.

But it wasn't until I finally got to meet the bride and groom at their engagement session in Venice Beach, that the excitement really kicked in. It was clear to see that these two are madly in love. Their chemistry is undeniable and they are most certainly giddy for one another. As a wedding photographer, I couldn't ask for anything better. It's couples like these that you don't have to give much direction, because they are so comfortable around one another, and capturing their love is simple because it pours out of them with every glance. I love this because I'm able to truly capture couples like this as they are. A simple "lean towards her ear and tell her how beautiful she is", is all it takes to make Kristen break out that award-winning smile.

One of my favorite moments of this wedding at the Redwood Room was the bride and groom's first look. The moment had finally come for Matt and Kristen to see each other in a private setting right before their wedding ceremony. Emotions were at an all time high and Matt had to catch his breath because he could not contain all of the love in his heart for Kristen. It was enough to bring tears to my eyes from behind the camera. You can't "pose" moments like this. But you'll have to read on to see the photos from the first look...

How he asked...

From the groom: "Kristen and I met at a party at her house our freshmen year of college. We were both dating other people at the time but we were definitely checking each other out... haha. I wanted to make the wedding proposal really special for Kristen. She had never been out of the country before so I invited her on a trip to Italy with my family. Our first night in Rome I took her on a night walk to the Trevi fountain. The fountain looked beautiful in the moonlight and a light rain fell from the sky. I told her to turn her back to the fountain, close her eyes, make a wish, and throw the coin over her shoulder into the fountain. She followed my instructions unsuspectingly and when she opened her eyes I was waiting on my knee to propose. I told her that it was always going to be her and that I knew it from the moment we went on our first date. After lots of tears she finally said yes and we kissed in the rain."

Choosing The Wedding Venue

When I asked the bride and groom how they chose the Redwood Room at Calamigos Ranch as their wedding venue, Matt told me, "We had heard about Calamigos Ranch from various people and decided to start our wedding venue search there. When we saw it in person we instantly fell in love with it and booked our date the same day." Sounds like destiny if you ask me. When you know, you know!

What Inspired your Wedding

The groom says, "Our wedding was inspired by Colorado and the beautiful mountains and trees. When we visited Calamigos Ranch we definitely got a Colorado vibe and fell in love with the outdoor wedding venue. Kristen loves classic styles so we tried to incorporate classic elements with the rustic aesthetic of the wedding venue."

Tell me about the Honeymoon!...

From the groom: "For our honeymoon I got to take Kristen out of the country for a second time, to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas! It was the end of the tourist season there so it felt like we had the resort all to ourselves which made it even more romantic. Our favorite part of the trip was a powerboat excursion that took us to a private island where we fed iguanas and stingrays, and snorkeled with sharks. We both wished that day would never end."

Favorite Moment of your Wedding Day...

From the groom: "Our favorite moment of the wedding was just after the ceremony when the guests cleared out and we went back up to the alter to soak in everything that had just happened. We danced under the stars and got to enjoy the beautiful venue one last time before the reception started."

Walnut Grove Wedding in Moorpark, Ca

Walnut Grove Wedding at Tierra Rejada Farms

Brian and Ellen's wedding day at the Walnut Grove was a dream. I photograph a lot of weddings, but it's rare to come across a wedding day that is so effortlessly beautiful in the way that theirs was. For starters, they hired a dream team of vendors who worked absolute creative magic. Every detail was so romantic and true to who they are as a couple, yet Brian and Ellen never lost sight of what their wedding day was all about. They kept their love at the center of it all.

The wedding was held at the Walnut Grove at Tierra Rejada Farms in Moorpark, Ca. It was a beautiful sunny day with a warm breeze that whispered through the walnut trees. Like I said before, it was a dream. Brian and Ellen had been waiting for this day for some time and couldn't have been more happy to be surrounded by their closest family and friends for the occasion.

As a Malibu wedding photographer, my favorite moment from Brian and Ellen's Walnut Grove wedding was getting to take photos of the couple in the most beautiful rose garden (Grace Rose Farms) that was next door to the wedding venue. We found out later from the florist, that she had coincidentally sourced the roses to make the bride's bouquet from that very farm! How cool is that?!

How the Bride and Groom met...

From the Bride: "We met on eHarmony right before my membership was about to end. I made the first move, leaving a 'smile' on Brian’s profile. He 'smiled' back, and the onversation began from there. We went to an art museum for our first date and, since things were going well and we didn’t want to say goodbye just yet, we followed it up by grabbing dinner together at a create-your-own pizza place (something we still enjoy doing to this day). Shortly after that first date, my membership expired and Brian noticed that my profile was no longer active – he thought I was so sure about him that I had canceled my membership! Well, I did like him a lot, so it was perfect timing".

How the Groom proposed...

From the Bride: "We were up at my grandparents cabin in Lake Tahoe for New Year’s. Brian was planning to propose sometime over the course of the long weeked, but as soon as we arrived at the cabin he says he was so nervous and stressed that he couldn’t wait any longer. We went outside to explore the snow-covered landscape, and just as the sun was setting and the magic hour hit the mountains, Brian asked if we could go out on the pier. He asked me to come sit beside him and began telling me how special it was being up in Tahoe together, how much he loved being with me, and how wonderful I am. I just thought he was being extra sweet, but then he gave me a hug that lasted way too long and started to shake a little. I said, 'Brian, what’s going on?' and when he said 'Nothing' I got the feeling that he was about to propose. Sure enough, he pulled out a beautiful rose gold diamond ring, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. It was a complete surprise and so much fun to share that moment together, staring out across the lake and just repeating 'Oh my goodness, we’re engaged!'."

Wedding Planning Inspiration...

From the Bride: "Brian and I love the outdoors, so we knew we definitely wanted an outdoor ceremony that felt effortlessly romantic and somewhat rustic (but NOT farm-y!!). We wanted the wedding to feel intimate and easy-going, so we kept our guest list small and only invited our immediate families and closest friends. It was a tough decision, but in the end it really simplified things and made us feel most comfortable on our wedding day (which was overwhelming enough as it is!). As far as the feel, we wanted an effortlessly romantic style and Brian built our ceremony arch so that it could be just what we wanted."

How did you choose your wedding venue?

From the Bride: "Brian’s best man and his girlfriend had been to our venue for another friend’s wedding. We were all rock climbing together and I was talking about how we hadn’t found the right fit yet for our venue. We wanted an outdoor location that felt removed from Los Angeles without being an insane drive for all our guests, and a naturally beautiful location that would feel effortlessly romantic without blowing the budget – our friends mentioned they had just been to a wedding at The Walnut Grove and showed us photos. They raved about the catering, the market lights, the landscape and vibe. After touring it ourselves and meeting all the genuine and hard-working staff, we booked it. The Walnut Grove at Tierra Rejada Farms was the perfect outdoor wedding venue."

Any advice for brides planning their wedding day?

From the Bride: "My advice for brides planning their wedding day is to take it all in stride. As much as you can, be present in every moment and enjoy even the 'annoying' stuff like long car rides to check out venues and late night planning with your fiance. It’s all part of the joy of growing together as a couple: holding hands on those long car rides and taking in the conversation shared during those late nights. And overall, constantly remind the other person to let go and leave it up to fate when details are beyond your control. It’s far better to enjoy the experience for what it is than to miss out on the experience entirely because you’re too busy wishing it was something else. Oh yeah, and everything will be beautiful… just breathe and focus on the amazing person you get to spend the rest of your life with!"

What was your favorite moment of your wedding day?

From the Bride: "My favorite moment was the cake cutting. We ultimately played it sweet, but there was definitely a long pause in there where we locked eyes and were totally trying to figure out if the other person was going to smash cake in our face or not."

Terra Bella Wedding in Murrieta, Ca

Terra Bella Wedding in Murrieta, Ca

Zane and Olivia are the kind of couple that make you feel right at home with them. I have known Zane for several years, and finally got the chance to meet Olivia at their Temecula wine country engagement session. She is kind, caring, full of life, and they are both crazy about each other. I was so happy for my friend that he found someone who compliments him so well. I quickly became close friends with Olivia as well and was honored to be able to photograph their wedding in Murrieta.

The Wedding Venue- Terra Bella

Olivia’s parents own a new wedding venue in Murrieta called Terra Bella, that will be opening up this fall. Zane and Olivia’s wedding was the first one to take place at the new venue, and having photographed several weddings in Temecula, I have to tell you, it is such a cool outdoor wedding venue north of Temecula Wine Country. When I asked the bride how she chose her wedding venue, she said she was looking for a unique venue in Murrieta. She loved that Terra Bella offered a private outdoor space with a gorgeous view of the mountains. She loved that she had found the perfect wedding venue that was elegant, yet rustic at the same time.
